A number of children and their bus driver narrowly avoided serious injury this week, when a plank of wood fell off a van and smashed through the windscreen of their school bus.
The shocking incident happened on Wednesday afternoon at Garshooey, between Killea and Carrigans in Co. Donegal.
The driver of the bus, Brendan McGee, told Highland Radio: “I had been doing my drop offs as usual. I was coming down on the main road when I had pulled in and stopped to let another child off.
"The next thing I knew there was the bang. I wasn’t sure what had happened", he said
"There was a van with a trailer on behind, with a ladder and a plank of wood. It obviously wasn’t secured properly. The plank of wood came through the windscreen of the bus".
The plank of wood just missed a child, who if taller, could have been seriously injured.
There were four children on the bus at the time and Mr. McGee said that "it’s difficult to come to terms with what could have happened".
