Saturday will be a mixture of showers in the east but sunshine in the north and northwest. Strong northeasterly winds along the east coast will make it feel colder than 3 to 6 degrees.

However, Saturday night will be clear but very cold with temperatures expected to fall as low as -5C in the northwest of the country but still as low as -2C elsewhere.

Sunday will be another dry and cold day with some periods of sunshine. Highest temperatures will be just above freezing in places during the day and falling to between -3C and -5C overnight.

The early forecast is for the bitter spell to continue into next week with dry, crips days and freezing overnnight temperatures.
