Ireland has an exciting future in track and field as Kildare boy Bernard Ibirogba just won the Fastest Kid on the Block race at the Millrose Games meeting in New York.

Ibirogda qualified through a Fastest Feet competition that involved over 8,000 Irish children, and won the 55 metres title by a mere thousandth-of-a-second in a dramatic finish.

The speedster's parents, Abiodun and Kudirat, who  moved to Ireland in 2000, and his teacher/ coach Seán Connolly were in New York to watch the Scoil Naomh Pádraig student race to victory in a time of 8.403 seconds.

Donegal’s Emily Kelly also ran a fantastic race in the girls event, finishing third with a time of 8.97 seconds.
