Excitement is building in Laois with the arrival of a brand-new family attraction opening this summer. Set on a real working farm just outside Abbeyleix, the Maize Maze at Dealgrove Farm is the first of its kind in the county — and it’s already turning heads.
Beautifully carved into the shape of a giant tractor, the six-acre maze promises fun and adventure for all ages. Open every Saturday and Sunday from 26 July through to October, it’s a great way to get outdoors and explore the countryside. Children can follow a playful, educational trail as they make their way through the towering maize, learning about farming, crops and animals along the way. There’s even a life-sized dairy cow called Maisie that’s fitted with a real milking system for hands-on fun.
The maze is part of a wider visitor experience that includes lawn games, chill-out zones, homemade bakes and freshly brewed coffee. It’s an ideal setting for families, school groups or clubs looking for a relaxed and entertaining day out. Only five minutes from Abbeyleix, it’s an easy journey from across Laois and beyond.
The project was made possible through funding from the 2025 Rural Innovation and Development Fund and is the latest venture from local farmer Stephen Pratt, who diversified his tillage farm to create something unique and memorable for his community. While mazes have grown in popularity across Ireland, few capture the imagination quite like this one — the overhead design spells out ‘Support Irish Farmers’ alongside the detailed tractor outline.
